There is a specific moment every year when the season shifts, the harbor fills up with boats, and you realize there is absolutely no better place on earth to be than right here. Summer in Marblehead isn’t just a change in the weather; it’s that unmistakable, comforting feeling of paradise at home.
While our winding historic streets and coastal views draw plenty of out-of-town visitors this time of year, living here means you hold the keys to the real experience. You know the exact timing secrets, the quietest sunset perches, and the traditions that bind our community together.
Whether you’ve lived here for decades or you’re celebrating your very first season in town, maximizing the next few months is all about leaning into what makes our community so special. To help you make the most of it, here is the ultimate, essential Marblehead summer bucket list.
Reclaim the Magic of the Festival of Arts
It’s the crown jewel of our summer calendar for a reason. The Marblehead Festival of Arts over the Independence Day weekend completely takes over the town, and it's an incredible showcase of local pride and community spirit.
From wandering through the historic homes turned into pop-up art galleries, to hunting for treasures at the Artisans’ Marketplace at Abbot Hall, to the ultimate punctuation mark–heading down to Crocker Park for the evening concerts. Sitting out on the grass with your neighbors, listening to live music at the water's edge, and watching the harbor lights blink on is a timeless town tradition that completely captures the essence of a Marblehead summer.
Master the Devereux Beach Timing
Devereux is Marblehead’s go-to stretch of sand, but trying to park there at noon on a scorching Saturday is a lesson in frustration.
Take advantage of the long summer days by planning a "late shift" beach trip. Head down after 4:00 PM when the midday crowds start packing up, the sun softens, and the parking gets easy. Bring some local takeout, set up a chair, and enjoy the absolute best, most peaceful hours on the shore.
Grab a Lobster Roll by the Water
You can’t talk about a New England summer without mentioning seafood, and we have some of the best spots right on the water. Whether you're sitting on the deck at The Barnacle watching the tide roll in, or grabbing a classic lobster roll from Little Harbor Lobster Company, it’s a mandatory summer tradition.
If the main waterfront is packed on a busy weekend, take your food to-go and walk over to Gas House Beach. Tucked quietly away in Little Harbor, it’s a scenic, peaceful little stretch where you can sit right on the stone wall, eat your lunch, and escape the main town traffic to experience a true staple of the season!
Explore the Harbor via the Public Launch
Marblehead is beautiful from the shore, but it’s unmatched when you’re looking back at the town from the water. Fortunately, you don’t need to own a boat or hold a private club membership to get the experience.
Head down to State Street Landing (right next to The Landing restaurant) and hop on Jordan’s Launch. It’s our town’s only public launch service, and you don’t need a reservation–just pay the driver $8 cash or scan their QR code on the boat. If you don’t have a specific boat to visit, they also run 25-minute harbor tours throughout the day for $10. Catch an earlier ride before the harbor wakes up for the most serene start to a summer’s day–when the water is like glass, the boats are perfectly still, and the harbor vantage point completely changes your perspective of our beloved coastline.
Walk across the land bridge to Gerry Island
There aren’t many places where you can walk across the ocean floor to an uninhabited island, but we have one right off Little Harbor. When the tide drops completely, a rocky gravel land bridge reveals itself, connecting the mainland straight to Gerry Island.
Timing is everything here. Give yourself an hour window at dead low tide to explore the island's rocky edges and look back at the Old Town skyline from across the water. Just keep an eye on the clock so you don't get stranded when the water rushes back in!
At the end of the day, the real beauty of a Marblehead summer isn't found in a single landmark or a crowded tourist spot. It’s found in the quiet, everyday moments that connect us to the coast and to each other. It’s the ease of walking down a historic lane, the salt air coming through the windows, and the shared appreciation we have for this incredible piece of the North Shore.
If you’re out and about enjoying the sunshine and want to grab a coffee to talk real estate, look at local market trends, or simply brainstorm how to maximize your home’s value before the fall market hits, let me know. I'm always happy to connect. Have a fantastic summer, and I'll see you around town!
